Piedmont Arts presented a virtual program by griot Charlotte Blake Alston of the National Association of Black Storytellers to 6th, 7th and 8th graders at Martinsville Middle School in December.
Alston's program taught students about storytelling traditions and contemporary song folklore. Her stories focused on familial themes: a stepmother learning to connect with and care for her stepson; a sister who takes on the parental responsibilities for her brothers when they are orphaned; and the Legend of John Henry.
