Historian Christopher Irving talks comics at free event on June 12

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (June 13, 2025) — Virginia Museum of Fine Arts educator Christopher Irving presented a reading from his book, "Leaping Tall Buildings: The Origin of American Comics," to around 30 guests on June 12 at Piedmont Arts.

Using quotes from famous comic creators such as Stan Lee, Frank Miller and Art Spiegelman, Irving discussed the history and future of American comics, and explored some of the emerging talent in the comic book field.

Event co-host Pres Garrett of Starling Avenue Cards and Comics also displayed a selection from his extensive collection of comic books for guests to peruse.

This event was co-hosted with Starling Avenue Cards and Comics in partnership with Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Statewide Programs.
