Gail Doyle Smith is a visual artist based along the Brunswick River in coastal North Carolina, where the rhythms of water, marsh, and sky shape both her daily life and her artistic vision. Living on the river has provided an enduring source of inspiration for paintings that depict tranquil coastal landscapes, shore birds, wildlife, and native flora with sensitivity and depth.
As Smith notes, the river is a shared muse in her household. “My husband is an artist, too. His medium is historic river wood, so the river is our muse. We are continually awed by the water, marsh, and sky views just outside our window.” This close relationship with place infuses her work with an intimate understanding of the coastal environment.
Straddling the line between representation and modern impressionism, Smith’s bold, painterly style has evolved through more than 17 years of focused study and experimentation in oils. She paints subjects she loves, approaching color with curiosity and a spirit of exploration that brings vitality and warmth to her compositions.
Smith’s work is represented in galleries throughout the region and has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions, including those sponsored by the Wilmington Art Association, the Art League of Leland, the Waterway Art Association, Wildlife Artists of the Carolinas, Inc., and Gallery Citrine. She has also been a regular participant in the Landfall Foundation’s annual exhibition. In July 2023, her painting “Fairystone Park Falls” was featured on the cover of the magazine, Garden Club of Virginia Journal.
Smith is a member of the Wilmington Art Association, the Art League of Leland, and Piedmont Arts.
