Harold Knowlton Work Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Arts is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities to eligible rising college sophomores, juniors or seniors. These awards are funded annually through the Harold Knowlton Work Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by his wife to continue higher education studies in the visual and performing arts.
Julia Ascough Work and Harold Knowlton Work shared a lifelong passion and respect for education and the arts. This generous Memorial Scholarship will ensure that their legacy of learning and imagination lives on by supporting the artists of future generations.
Rising college sophomores, juniors or seniors who graduated from a high school in Martinsville or Henry County are eligible to apply for this scholarship for study in the visual or performing arts. Each applicant must be a candidate for a degree in the visual or performing arts from an accredited four-year institution.
About the Award
Scholarships are available to eligible rising sophomore, junior or senior college students who are currently pursuing a degree in the arts. They are nonrenewable and are payable directly to educational institutions upon notification of enrollment by the recipients. Members of the Piedmont Arts Association Scholarship Committee determine the number and amount of awards based on their evaluations of the applicants' CD portfolios or DVD auditions, transcripts, personal statements, and letters of recommendation. Up to $2,500 is available for Work Memorial Scholarship awardees.
Application Form: All applicants must complete the Work Memorial Scholarship Application.
Personal Statement: The applicant must submit a one-page statement of his or her post graduation goals in the arts and the specific purpose for which the scholarship will be used.
Transcript: Each applicant must provide a transcript from an accredited four-year institution showing earned credits toward the desired degree in visual or performing arts.
Recommendations: Each application must include two recommendations – one from a visual or performing arts instructor as appropriate and one from the college's department head or dean.
Portfolio or Audition:
Applicants are required to personally interview and audition for the committee. Visual arts
applicants are asked to present five examples of their artwork. Performing arts applicants are asked to demonstrate their abilities with a performance piece/s of no more than five minutes in length.
This is an important part of the selection process and students are strongly encouraged to discuss audition/portfolio choices with their advisor or instructors.
