This Treausre Chest contains items and books related to the Underground Railroad – the centerpiece being a replica of the quilt in the children's book, Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson. Members of the Virginia Foothills Quilters Guild volunteered to make the quilt in honor of Black History Month. The quilters cut apart a color picture of the quilt and divided it so that each had several squares to reproduce. They found fabrics that closely matched the picture, pieced the squares and then sewed the squares together. The result is a quilt that makes the story come to life.
