Sep 7 through Oct 21, 2007
Sculptor Eric McGehearty will display his work at Piedmont Arts from September 7 – October 21, 2007. McGehearty’s show, entitled “Access Denied”, features sculptures that are in direct reference to his struggles with the learning disability dyslexia and, on a larger scale, relate to feelings of stress and confusion that all people can relate to.
With sculptures that are intense and purposeful, McGehearty takes his viewers through a maze of literature firmly encased in cement blocks; textbooks locked tight inside sturdy metal structures; and malformed panels of blurred, unreadable words. Viewing his work, one cannot help but feel the frustration of his struggle with written language. Yet, those who have never experienced the struggles of a learning disability can appreciate McGehearty’s work for the general sense of emotion it conveys.
McGehearty is a graduate of North Texas University with an MFA in sculpture. His work has been shown in seven solo exhibitions and countless group and museum shows, including shows at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts at Florida State University.
Also on display at Piedmont Arts: “Pots and Pixels: Clay and Digital Work by Shirley Cadmus” (Lynwood Artists Gallery) and “Renderings of Façade Studies” – a look at building facades in Uptown Martinsville (Box Mezzanine). Piedmont Arts is always FREE and open to the public. For more information visit www.PiedmontArts.org or call 276-632-3221.
